Healthcare leadership

Leadership coaching for healthcare leaders

Healthcare leadership is its own job. The decisions carry clinical weight, the staffing never quite settles, and the people you lead are tired in a way that a morale initiative does not reach.

Michele Smith, MHA, PCC, led in healthcare before she coached in it. Her years at Sutter Health, combined with a Master of Healthcare Administration and the ICF Professional Certified Coach credential, mean you do not have to translate your world for her: she already knows what a bed meeting, a survey window, a physician relationship and a short-staffed unit feel like from the inside.

Coaching is a private hour that belongs to you, which is rare in a system built around everyone else. Leaders bring the conversation they have been avoiding, the decision they keep rewriting, the relationship with a physician or a peer that has quietly hardened, or the question of whether they still want the role they worked years to get.

The work is practical. You think out loud, Michele asks the questions that surface what you already suspect, and you leave with something you can do before the next shift rather than a theory about leadership. Where it helps, DISC gives you language for why a colleague responds the way they do.

Clients include nurse managers and directors, physician leaders, administrators and executives, in Sacramento health systems and remotely across the country. What they have in common is responsibility that cannot be set down, and the sense that there is nowhere safe to think about it.

  • A confidential hour

Nothing you say reaches your organization. Coaching follows the ICF code of ethics.

  • Someone who knows the setting

Sutter Health leadership experience and an MHA, so the context needs no explaining.

  • The conversations you dread

Physicians, peers, staff and your own leader: rehearsed before they happen.

  • Decisions and sustainability

Whether to take the role, how to hold it, and what has to change for you to stay in it.

A few honest answers

Do you understand clinical settings?

Yes. Michele holds a Master of Healthcare Administration and led at Sutter Health, so the operational reality of units, clinics and systems is familiar ground rather than something you have to explain.

Is coaching confidential from my employer?

Yes. When an employer sponsors coaching, they may know that sessions are happening and whether goals are being worked on, but the content of your sessions stays between you and Michele, in line with the ICF code of ethics.

Can my organization pay for this?

Often, yes. Healthcare employers regularly fund coaching for a leader they want to keep or develop. Michele can send an outline that works for a manager or HR approval.

Is this therapy?

No. Coaching is forward-looking and focused on your work: decisions, relationships and how you lead. If something would be better served by therapy, Michele will say so plainly.

How often do we meet?

Most leaders meet every two to three weeks, which keeps momentum without adding pressure to a full calendar. Sessions are an hour, and monthly clients can split an hour into two half-hours.

What does it cost?

Single sessions are $375, and packages bring the per-session price down. Pricing is on the coaching packages page, and nothing is bought on the discovery call.
